Thématique de recherches

Thomas Claverie est un biologiste marin intéressé par le lien qui existe entre morphologie et fonction dans un contexte, à la fois évolutif, et écologique. Les modèles animaux sur lesquels il travaille sont principalement les crustacés et les poissons.

Thomas a obtenu son doctorat dans l’université de Londres en décembre 2007 après trois ans de recherche dans une station marine écossaise pour étudier la biologie d’un crustacé : la galathée. Ensuite il a réalisé un postdoctorat de trois ans et demi à l’université de Californie Berkeley et l’université du Massachusetts Amherst aux États-Unis où il a étudié l’évolution des mouvements rapides chez la mante de mer. Finalement il a réalisé un nouveau postdoctorat d’un an et demi à l’université de Californie Davis aux États unis pour travailler sur la diversité des formes dans un contexte évolutif chez les poissons tropicaux.

Au Centre universitaire de Mayotte, il utilise son savoir-faire pour mieux comprendre le fonctionnement des écosystèmes lagonaires et l’impact anthropique sur l’équilibre de ce système. Plus particulièrement, il utilise des connaissances en biomécanique, en écologie et en évolution chez les poissons pour donner à chacune des espèces une place fonctionnelle dans l’écosystème. De plus, à l’aide de techniques innovantes, il travaille à la caractérisation des habitats et des assemblages de poissons dans des écosystèmes lagonaires pour mieux comprendre les processus entrainants des variations dans ces écosystèmes, mais surtout comment les forçages environnementaux influencent l’évolution des poissons récifaux.
